Row over Serlui hydel project in Mizoram

Aizawl: Officials on Monday maintained that compensation had been provided to the affected people of the 12 MW Serlui B hydel project which is nearing completion even as reports poured in that some families had refused to move out of the affected site alleging non-payment of compensation.

Kolasib DC Dawngliana told UNI over phone, ''So far as compensation is concerned, the government has done what should have been done. The reports took me by surprise.''

However, the Kolasib DC on Monday ordered an inquiry into the reports.

''We have cleared all compensation on our part,'' power and electricity chief engineer C Thangliana said, adding the project would have a trial run by June this year.

The entire village of Builum will be submerged after the completion of the project, for which adequate compensation and rehabilitation schemes have been provided.

Even as storing of water in the earthen dam has been started, families in Builum have alleged that they had not been given compensation.

The villagers alleged that irregularities in the assessment of compensation claims which was because the officials ''made the assessment without visiting the site.''

According to officials, around 70 families have been resettled at Bawktlang village in Kolasib district from Builum village.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 191.13 crore, the Serlui B hydel project is the first earth-filled dam in Mizoram. (UNI)
