Suspected militants gun down 9 migrants in Manipur

IMPHAL, May 11 – Unidentified armed persons suspected to be militants killed atleast nine non-locals near Khordak area close to Keibul Lamjao National park in Manipurs Bishnupur district on Monday. Army sources from 57 Mountain Division, Leimakhong confirmed about the killings of nine persons. So far five dead bodies were seen, Colonel A K Choudhury, media cell in charge of the Army Division said and claimed,we suspects the handy work of UNLF into the killing.

A team of police led by K Jayentakumar, SP Bishnupur district have rushed to the spot to investigate the incident.

None of the militant organisations operating in the State has claimed responsibility for the killings till the filing of this report. A team of police has rushed to the spot this evening to investigate the incident. They are reportedly searching for more bodies in and around the marshyland area of the park based on reports.

Mention may be made that security forces had killed around 12 militants in a fortnight-long “Operation Summerstorm” last month in the Keibul Lamjao National Park. It evoked a public outcry in view of the displacement of over 2,000 villagers of Khordak and Nongmaikhong villages in the area.

Storm: A storm sweeping over Manipur in the last two nights caused damages in the State capital. The main routes in the capital bore the signs of the midnight lashing of the storm, which lasted for over one hour.

Some newly constructed houses and other buildings were destroyed in the valley area. Tamenglong district also witnessed damages with a couple of huts blown away.
