Outstanding nurses to be awarded: health minister

Imphal, May 12: The birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale was widely observed today in the state at various nursing institutes. The International Nurses’ Day celebration was observed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences under the theme “Delivering quality, serving community, nurses leading care innovation” by the Nurses Association of Manipur.

As a chief guest of the function, Ph Parijat, minister for health and family welfare said that to encourage the nurses and their works, district and state level outstanding performance awards would be given to the talented nurses of Manipur.

Regular refresher training courses would also be started by the government for nurses, he added.

He further said that due to the National Rural Health Mission Scheme arriving in Manipur, a number of nurses are employed as well as benefits given to the general public.

He also mentioned that when the JNIMS becomes functional, it would give more benefits to the nurses, students and public.

During the observation held at JNIMS, Porompat, Kh Khuraileima, member of the Nurses Association of Manipur read out the life history of Florence Nightingale.

Meanwhile, the Trained Nurses Association of India also observed the International Nurses’ Day today. Speaking to the IFP, the institute’s advisor said the TNAI would observe the birthday of Florence Nightingale for a week starting from today under a programme named “International Nurses Week”.

The TNAI advisor further said that during the week-long observation nurses from 15 private institutes and four government institutes would participate in events like scientific poster presentation and outdoor and indoor games to be held at Khuman Lampak and RD Wing Campus, Lamphel.

During the observation, on May 17 a programme is to be held at Uripok Khumanthem Leikai with resource persons like Dr. I Nalini, Dr. Kh Ratan and Dr. Shyamkumar Laishram who will give speeches on NRHM, essential newborn care, advantages of breast feeding etc.

Also a reception of the National Florence Nightingale Award winner and presentation of awards will be held at the function.

The TNAI advisor added that TNAI was to send all the toppers from the different events of games and other competitions to West Bengal’s Salt Lake to participate in a conference which will be held from the last week of October 2009 to the first week of November 2009.

The staff nurses of Koirengei Catholic Medical Centre Hospital also celebrated the International Nurses’ Day by remembering Florence Nightingale on her birth anniversary.

The International Nurses’ Day to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nighingale was celebrated today at a function jointly organised by the nurses of Shija Hospital and students of Shija Academy of Nursing at the Shija auditorium in Langol.
