Anti-NIT protestors stopped near Assembly

IMPHAL, Feb 25: Another bid to register their strong opposition against the decision to establish the National Institute of Technology, NIT at Langol by the residents of the area was foiled today by the police who stopped the protestors who were trying to forcibly march towards the Assembly complex this noon.

The attempt came amidst the state chief minister O Ibobi Singh’s appeal to the House today not to give hindrance in construction of the institute at the site.

The chief minister who was replying to a call attention motion in the House also promised adequate compensation and rehabilitation schemes for the affected people.

Today at around noon, hundreds of slogan shouting protestors, mostly womenfolk of Langol Laimanai, converged near the state family welfare office located next to the heavily guarded Manipur legislative Assembly complex and attempted to march towards the Assembly.

They shouted slogans like ‘Langol da NIT shaba yaroi’ (No NIT construction at Langol), ‘Thawaidagi lamna henna maru oi’ (Land is more important than life), ‘Ekhoi thawai thaba pamude’ (We don’t mind losing our life), etc.
They intruded into the area from the overbridge side and attempted to march towards the Assembly complex before the security forces in the area intercepted and blocked them.

Later, additional police personnel from the city police rushed to the spot and dispersed them with a lathi-charge.

Mention may be made that in a bid to obstruct the land demarcation process of the state revenue department on last Saturday, at least twelve women sustained injuries when women police and IRB lathi-charged them.
