IMPHAL, Feb 29: Maintaining that the demands of All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) and Manipur University Tribal Students’ Union (MUTSU) are genuine , Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today informed that Assembly that the State Government wou-ld be taking up the matter with the Human Resource Development Ministry and the Prime Minister.
During the course of discussion on the Demands Grant in the Assembly today, MLA VA Hangkhalian and MLA Awangbow Newmai raised the issue pointing out the demand of ATSUM and MUTSU has become a serious issue.
In case of withdrawal of all the tribal students, the academic atmosphere and activities of the Manipur University would be affected and created a very big problem, the two MLAs said, drawing the attention of the House on the ongoing impasse.
In his response, leader of the House Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh noted that after the conversion of Manipur University into a Central University, the State Government could not interfere in the affairs of the University.
Nonetheless, apart from implementing the hundred point roster programme , the State Government has been exerting pressures on the Central Government in connection with the demands of the student bodies. However, the Central Govern- ment has insisted that the reservation policy should be on all India pattern.
Not only the demands of the student bodies, but also on other important issues, it is essential to sit together along with all the MLAs of the Hills to discuss the matter and put pressures on the Central Government collectively for amending the Manipur University Act, the Chief Minister said.
If necessary, a delegation of the MLAs from the hill districts of Manipur can be send to the Centre to take up this issue with the Prime Minister as well as with the Human Resource Development Ministry, the Chief Minister observed, while appealing to all the tribal students not to take a hasty decision on pulling out from the University.
RJD wants NIT at Gadailong
IMPHAL, Feb 29: The RJD Tamenglong District Council has appealed to the SPF Government to established the National Institute of Technology (NIT) at a suitable place in Tamenglong district .
A press release issued by the RJD Tamenglong District Council Thomas Pamei suggested that the NIT may be set up at Gadailong at the outskirts of Tamenglong district Hqs.
Regarding the District Council elections, Thomas Pamei asserted that the polls should be held according to the fixed schedule.
