Death threat to Sonia

Thiruvananthapuram: A call which has been traced to Muscat was received by the police here on Sunday warning that Congress president Sonia Gandhi would be assassinated during her Kerala visit scheduled for next week, officials here said.

Speaking to IANS, Inspector General of Police Arun Kumar Sinha said that the call came at around 6.15 pm to the office of the Kollam superintendent of police.

"Immediately the state police began an investigation and soon traced the call to Muscat, the capital of Sultanate of Oman. The caller spoke in Malayalam," Sinha said.

Sonia Gandhi is arriving in Kochi on Dec 15 and would return to Delhi the next day.

She will take part in the state conference of the Congress party and address a public rally.

On Dec 16, she is scheduled to speak at the delegate session of the party which is expected to be attended by 7,000 Congressmen from across the state.

Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan, a few months ago, too received a similar threat. That call was traced to Saudi Arabia.

"We traced the origin of the call and we identified the place also, but since it came from another country, we could not take any action," Sinha said. (IANS)
