MUTSU reiterates demand

Imphal, Dec 11: The Manipur University Tribal Students’ Union (MUTSU) has reaffirmed its demands for a full-fledged Hill Univ-ersity or 34.2 percent reser- vation at the Manipur University (MU) stating that the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) is not what it demanded nor does it fulfils their demands. MUTSU said that after having had found out that IGNTU is similar to IGNOU, the tribal students were disappointed.

Speaking to NNN, Som-thang Haokip, president of MUTSU stated that the tribal students of the university have never been really happy with the decision of the government to set up a regional centre of IGNTU in the state. ‘‘What we demand is either 34.2 percent reservation or a sepa- rate full-fledged Hill University’’, affirmed the presi- dent stating that IGNTU was not what it demanded.

Earlier, IGNTU was accepted by MUTSU and All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSOM) becau-se it was Centrally funded besides an opportunity for the tribal students who had left the campus to come back, added the president.

The tribal students of the university left the campus on Oct 6 following its agitation for a separate univer- sity or a 34.2 pc reservation.

Mary Kom felicitated

IMPHAL, Dec 11: World Boxing championship Mary Kom was felicitated by Governor Gurbachan Jagat at Raj Bhavan today. The Governor presented a memento to the champion pugilist, conveyed a Raj Bhavan release.

Mary Kom won gold in the Fifth AIBA World Championships held at Ningbo city, China recently.
