IMPHAL, Dec 10: With the Suspension of Operation (SoO) signed between the Government of Manipur and armed Kuki UG groups existing only in name sake, armed cadres of some of the signatory partners continued to indulge in abduction of officials for ransom in the State.
In the latest incident, three officials of the Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) have been reportedly abducted by suspected armed cadres of one Kuki UG group from K Bungjang villag in Churachandpur district today morning.
Unofficial report late in the evening said that the officials have been released.
The abducted KVIB officials have been identified as Member Secretary Ning-thoubam Brojen Singh of Chingamakha Liwa Lambi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Thongam Birgopal of Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai and Beekeeping Fieldman Chungkhosei Haokip of Sugnu.
According to information received by the press, today morning a team of six KIVB officials have gone to K Bungjang village to conduct a training programme on beekeeping. As the officials were preparing for the training programme, five suspected UG cadres equipped with sophisticated weapons arrived in an autorickshaw at around 11.5 am and abducted the three officials at gun point. After taking the three officials from the venue of the training programme, the armed cadres drove them away together in the white coloured Gypsy (MN-1A/ 9540) belonging the Member Secretary Ningthoubam Brojen Singh. Afterward, the Gypsy was released along with the driver.
As the Police Headquarters have not yet received any official report on the abduction of three KVIB officials which took place at K Bungjang Village which is located 2 kms from Churachandpur district headquarters and around 4.5 kms tothe southwest of National Highway 150, no rescue measures have been taken up from the side of the police.
According to official sources from KVIB, Member Secretary Ningthoujam Brojen, who is among the three abducted officials today, had been earlier abducted in September last by Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) over the demand of Rs 30 lakhs. However, he was released after three days of captity on payment of Rs 1 lakhs from the demanded amount. - TSE
