Dikshit to be sworn-in as Delhi CM today

New Delhi: Sheila Dikshit, who led the Congress to a comfortable victory in Assembly polls for the third successive term will be sworn-in today as Chief Minister of the national capital.

Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna will administer oath of secrecy and post to Dikshit and her six cabinet ministers in a grand ceremony at the Raj Bhawan.

Dikshit had staked claim on Monday for formation of a new government in the city being the leader of the largest party in the city.

The 71-year-old Dikshit led the party to victory for the third consecutive term.

Congress has 43 seats in the 70-member House while Opposition BJP bagged 23 seats.

Dikshit has created a history of sort by being the only women chief minister of the Congress in the recent times.

Sources said the new government is likely to have some ministers from the previous cabinet -- A K Walia, Arvinder Lovely, Raj Kumar Chauhan and Mangat Ram Singhal.

They claimed that former minister Yoganand Shatri will be replaced by Malviya Nagar MLA Kiran Walia. (PTI)

Fate of 271 candidates to get sealed today

Srinagar: Fate of 271 candidates including two former CMs Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad would be sealed today, as 16 constituencies of Jammu and Kahsmir go to polls in the sixth round of the seven-phase assembly elections.

As many as 20,000 additional security forces personnel and nearly 10,000 local policemen have been deployed at 1,268 polling stations set up in the 16 assembly seats spread over five districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar, official sources said.

Former chief minister and PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who won from Pahalgam constituency in 2004 by-poll, is contesting from Anantnag this time.

Although there are 23 candidates in fray, Sayeed's is facing a stiff competition from his former lieutenant and NC state president Mehboob Beg.

Former Chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who like his bete-noire, Mufti Sayeed, entered the state assembly for the first time through by-poll in 2006, is seeking re-election from Bhaderwah constituency.

Though there are 13 candidates in fray, Azad's challenge comes from former advocate general and NC nominee Mohammad Aslam Goni, Sheikh Mujeeb of PDP and D K Kotwal of BJP. (PTI)

All India postal strike from today

Kolkata: Postal and railway mail services across the country will be hit by an indefinite strike by the regular employees owing allegiance to National Federation of Postal Employees from today

"As many as 2.80 lakh Gramin Dak Sewak (GDS) employees across the country working in the Department of Posts would go on strike from tomorrow to press for regularization of their service, NFPE leader Soumen Banerjee told PTI here.

Regular employees owing allegiance to NFPE have decided to extend solidarity to GDS staff by joining the strike, Banerjee, who is the president of All-India Postal Employees Union Class-III, Kolkata, GPO said.

Talks held during the day between the Secretary, Department of Posts, the Labour Commissioner and the leaders of the NFPE and All India Extra Departmental Employees Union in New Delhi had failed, he said.

He said GDS employees (earlier known as Extra Departmental Staff) had been demanding regularisation of their services for the past several years. (PTI)
