Violence against Manipur women up

SOBHAPATI SAMOM - IMPHAL, Dec 15 – Even though Manipuri women’s role in the socio-economic and cultural life of Manipur have been lauded in various platforms, violence against women in the State is on the rise.

As per reports collected by Women Action for Development (WAD), a pioneer women’s body, violence committed against women in the State is the highest this year as compared to the last three years.

There is a record 153 cases of domestic and social violence including 16 rape and 17 murder cases against women in Manipur this year while last year recorded only about 99 cases including 12 each of rape and murder cases. Besides, this year recorded the highest number of trafficking cases as well. The year witnessed a record 62 trafficking cases including 41 girls and 21 boys.

In 2006, the cases of violence against women stood at 105 of which there were 14 rape and 17 murder cases while 2005 recorded as many as 117 cases.

Acknowledging the issue, prominent film maker and father of Manipuri Cinema, Aribam Syam Sharma while addressing the concluding function of the 7th International fortnight observation protesting violence against women and children here on Saturday said the time has come for everyone in the State to do something for the cause.

Irengbam Arun, Editor of Ereibak, however, appealed that women of this era should go beyond 30 per cent reservation issue, otherwise status of women will not change.

Premchand Thongam of Poknapham daily was awarded Gender Journalist Award 2008 for his report on commercial sex workers. Last year’s awardee Ng Liklaileima of The Sangai Express handed over the award.

2 killed in Manipur

IMPHAL, Dec 15 – Two persons – a woman and a non-Manipuri man have been killed by unidentified gunmen in Imphal East and Imphal West districts of Manipur, official sources said today.

Three gunmen barged into the house of one Sanajaoba Singh at Nongren area in Imphal East district last night and ordered all the family members out at gun point.

However, they inquired about a woman from among them and when she came forward pumped four bullets into her. The 44-year-old woman, who was a prominent social worker, died on way to hospital, the sources said.

In another incident yesterday, unidentified gunmen shot dead a non-Manipuri labourer at Thangmeiband area near here in Imphal West district.
