Imphal, Dec 17 : The Sunday incident where a Church was dismantled by certain elements at Chingmeirong Kabui village in Imphal has drawn flaks with various Naga civil organisations saying that attacks on Christians in that village have become a regular affair.
The Naga Women Union, Manipur (NWUM), All Naga Students’ Association Manipur and Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights, South Sector (NPMHR) while strongly condemning the dismantling of a Church at Chingmeirong Kabui village on December 14, have said, “Attacks on Christians have become a regular phenomenon in Chingmeirong Kabui village. The use of violence and force to express disagreement is against all the basic tenets of human rights and justice, which the Nagas have been fighting for.”
NWUM, ANSAM and NPMHR said that freedom of belief is the founding principle for the peaceful existence of a just society and a fundamental right of every individual.
“The freedom of belief is intrinsically linked to the freedom of conscience and thought without which any individual will be unable to exercise her or his autonomy. It is worth remembering that the success of our society hinges on the contributions made by each and every component, of which various belief systems have played important roles,” the three organisations said.
Harping on the need for peaceful existence of “our community” the NWUM, NPMHR and ANSAM said, “While recognizing the tremendous challenges posed to the indigenous ways of life and belief from non-indigenous influences, one of the hallmarks of our indigenousness has been the tolerance and forbearance we have shown to other belief systems. It is very important for the peaceful existence of our community that we continue to demonstrate such tolerance”. NWUM, ANSAM and NPMHR then appealed everyone to respect the freedom of belief of each other and to restrain from using coercive and forceful means to resolve problems. “May the Prince of Peace reconcile each and every one of us during this Christmas, Merry Christmas,” wishes the three Naga frontal organisations.
