Indo-Myanmar border trade paralysed

MOREH, Dec 16: The Indo-Myanmar border trade activities at Moreh as well as in Namphalong of Myanmar have been serious affected as a result of the ongoing bandh being called by the JAC of Imphal-Moreh Road Transporters in protest against the burning of two Tata Sumos on December 2 and 3 respectively.

The normal trade volume on either side of the border has come down so much so that people of the border area particularly the small businessmen are finding it hard to carry on their business transaction.

The number of shops opening in the Namphalong Market, on the Myanmar side of the border, are also very few as there are no buyers from Moreh.

Meanwhile, a joint meeting of the village chiefs, representatives of the Moreh-based civil organisations and JAC Imphal-- Moreh Road Transporters held at Trade Centre, Moreh today has strongly con-demned the burning of the two Tata Sumos bearing registration nos. AS 25/B 3357 and MN 03P/0778 on December 2 and 3 respectively.

After a serious deliberation on the issue, the joint meeting resolved to appeal to all responsible individual/groups to come out with a clarification on the incident.

The joint meeting also resolved to make a joint appeal to the State Government in support of the demand of the JAC for providing compensation to the owners of the two gutted Tata Sumos. In case of failure to meet the demand, the meeting decided to intensify the ongoing agitation.
