White Lion, Firehouse rock Pine City

SHILLONG: Thousands of music aficionados from northeastern states and other metros of the country on Saturday evening flocked to Shillong, the queen of hill stations, to witness what was dubbed as the "mother of all rock concerts in India" at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex (JNSC) in the city where two internationally acclaimed rock bands Firehouse and White Lion performed on the same stage.

The audience, including young and old from Shillong, burst into thunderous clamour as the smoking machine puffed out and White Lion front man Mike Tramp and his band members took to the stage.

The American band belted out hit songs like When the children cry, Cry for freedom, You’re all I need, Gonna do it my way (from its new album Return of the Pride) and several others.

Firehouse, also an American hard rock band led by vocalist CJ Snare, thundered the music lovers with many of their super-hit numbers including You are my religion, I love you everyday, I live my life for you, Overnight sensation, When I look into your eyes and Sleeping with you.

It was Firehouse's second show in Shillong. The band first performed in the Pine City in front of record 40,000 people in 2004. White Lion performed here, or rather, India for the first time.

The concert was sponsored by Reliance Telecom and part of the proceeds would go into providing clean drinking water and enhanced nutrition to children at St. Edmund's Providence School run by Brother D’souza.

The capital of Meghalaya, known for its passion for western music, has emerged as the "Rock Capital of India" for international music bands with recent performances by Petra, Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR), Air Supply, former Iron Maiden front man Paul Di Anno, the voice of Mr Big Eric Martin and Sepultura.

"We never thought of two renowned bands performing together in Shillong or for that matter, in the North-East. This is the show which music lovers from the region and the country as a whole would remember in Shillong," Anungla Walling of Nagaland said. Linda Ralte from Manipur said, ''Though I did not get a chance to personally meet Mike Tramp, I am happy that I heard his voice live." (With inputs from UNI) Shillong Times
